The government has released the findings of its Best Value Inspection into Bedford Borough Council. Mayor Tom Wootton stated that he takes the findings, which he understands will concern residents, extremely seriously.
Mayor Wootton, who took office in May 2023, noted that the council was already facing considerable financial difficulties. An independent review by CIPFA had previously highlighted long-standing issues in financial management and governance, alongside current pressures impacting service delivery.
In response, the council has commissioned further independent scrutiny, implemented stricter spending controls, and developed a comprehensive Improvement Plan to address these identified challenges. Mayor Wootton acknowledged that there remains substantial work to be done.
The Mayor reiterated his primary focus on ensuring that Bedford Borough Council continues to provide essential services relied upon by residents while managing taxpayer money responsibly. He confirmed that the report's findings will be carefully considered, expressing determination to complete the necessary work and foster a council that residents can trust and be proud of.
