The free online system, which replaced a previous permit process, has been found to be quick and easy by residents. It allows cars and pickups to be registered for two years, and vans for six months. Residents are reminded to bring proof of their Bedford Borough address, such as a driving licence or Council Tax bill, when visiting the centre.
The new system is already helping to prevent misuse by businesses and individuals from outside the borough. Several businesses, including a care home from Cambridge, have been turned away, and landlords and property agents have been advised on appropriate commercial waste disposal routes. Businesses are directed to use dedicated commercial services offered by Bedford Borough Council.
Councillor Nicky Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment, stated: “We are pleased that more than 26,000 vehicles have registered in the first month, and that residents have found the process easy to use. This system protects the HWRC for the Bedford Borough residents who pay for it.” She added that the new process is quicker and simpler for residents, while helping to stop misuse.
Residents unable to visit the HWRC in person and requiring assistance from someone outside the borough to dispose of household waste should contact Customer Services in advance to arrange written permission. Further information, terms and conditions, and vehicle registration can be found on the Bedford Borough Council website.
