The Braintree District Council is reminding residents, businesses, and community groups that the consultation period for the Submission Draft Local Plan closes at 5pm on 6 November.

This Regulation 19 consultation represents the final chance for individuals to submit comments on the proposed Local Plan before it is considered by Full Council in December for potential submission to the Planning Inspectorate for an independent examination. The Local Plan is a crucial document designed to guide the growth and development of the Braintree district until 2043, identifying locations for new homes, jobs, and infrastructure, while also incorporating policies for environmental protection and the enhancement of heritage and green spaces. Once adopted, it will serve as a guide for all planning decisions within the district.
Local planning authorities are legally required by the Government to maintain an up-to-date plan that allocates sufficient sites to meet mandatory housing targets. The current plan has been developed following extensive public engagement, the incorporation of updated technical evidence, consultations with infrastructure providers, and adjustments to national planning policy. At this stage, the council is seeking feedback on whether the proposed plan and its supporting evidence have been prepared correctly and meet national planning requirements.
“

"An up-to-date Local Plan is essential to ensuring we can meet the need for homes, jobs and supporting infrastructure over the long term, while also helping to protect the environment, the character of our communities and setting out where development shouldn’t take place. The housing requirement we must plan for is set by central government, and without an up-to-date Local Plan we would have significantly less control over where development takes place and less ability to influence the infrastructure needed to support growth. It could also mean potential government intervention - having elements of decision-making powers taken away and being instructed what to do with the Local Plan. This is the final opportunity for residents, businesses and community groups to comment on the Submission Draft Local Plan and I would encourage everyone with an interest in the future of the district to review the documents and submit their comments before the consultation closes, so their comments can be considered directly by the Planning Inspector."

Detailed information regarding the consultation, supporting documents, and guidance on how to make a representation are available on the council's website at www.braintree.gov.uk/localplan2043. Hard copies of the consultation materials and response forms can also be accessed at local libraries throughout the district and at Causeway House in Braintree.
Following the closure of the consultation period, the plan will be presented to Full Council for a decision on whether to submit it to the Secretary of State for independent examination. This process will involve sharing all submitted comments. A Planning Inspector will then review the plan, consider the representations received, and determine if any modifications are necessary before its adoption. Any points individuals wish to raise with the Planning Inspector during the examination must be submitted as part of this consultation.
