Former Mayor of Southend, Councillor Nigel Folkard, has successfully raised over £30,000 to enhance end-of-life care services for patients at Southend Hospital.

The substantial donation of £30,181.49 will directly support the Dandelion Appeal, a vital initiative run by the Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity. This appeal is dedicated to creating more comfortable and dignified environments for patients receiving end-of-life care, as well as their loved ones. Councillor Folkard's contribution is specifically designated to benefit patients at Southend Hospital.
Throughout the year, Councillor Folkard and his dedicated fundraising committee organised a variety of events, including a fashion show, golf day, triathlon, charity dinners, afternoon teas, football matches, and a variety show. Councillor Folkard himself participated in the swimming leg of a triathlon and performed a tap dance routine.

Councillor Folkard recently visited Southend Hospital to present the donation cheque and view one of the four end-of-life rooms that have been funded through the appeal. His support has also facilitated the provision of ten overnight beds, recliner chairs, and a dedicated relatives' room, all aimed at creating a more comforting environment and allowing families to stay close to their loved ones.
Lucy Thomas-Clayton, Director of Charity and Voluntary Services at Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, expressed her gratitude: "We are incredibly grateful to Nigel and his committee for their outstanding support of the Dandelion Appeal. Raising more than £30,000 is a remarkable achievement and reflects the passion, energy and commitment they have shown throughout the year. Nigel has been a valued supporter of our charity for many years, not only through fundraising but also by generously giving his time at countless events. This donation will make a meaningful difference to patients and families receiving end-of-life care at Southend Hospital, helping us provide comfort, dignity and support when it matters most."
The Dandelion Appeal extends its funding for improvements across Basildon, Broomfield, and Southend hospitals. Further information about the appeal can be found on the Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity's website.
