Stevenage residents and community groups can now apply for free council grants of up to £7,500 per year through the new Local Environment Action Fund (LEAF) to support local climate change mitigation projects.

The Local Environment Action Fund (LEAF) aims to make the application process easier for individuals and community groups looking to implement small-scale projects. These initiatives, funded by planning gain contributions, can focus on areas such as cycling, planting, water conservation, or energy saving, offering tangible everyday benefits to the neighbourhood.
Each of Stevenage's 13 wards is allocated £7,500 annually. Applications, which must be for fixed and tangible outcomes (not ongoing costs or publicity), can range from £250 upwards. Proposals can be taken directly to ward councillors, who will champion eligible projects for council funding. Applications are then reviewed by officers and are subject to public feedback before grants are awarded.
“

"The relaunch and simplification of our climate change action grant scheme is great news for residents and community groups in Stevenage. This is a good opportunity to improve our environment and make our town a greener and better place to live, and I urge anyone who has an idea of something that can help address climate change and enhance their local area in their ward to come forward and speak to your local councillor to make it a reality; don’t let this opportunity go to waste."

Councillor Rob Broom · Cabinet member for Environment, Transport and Planning
The scheme's changes are designed to ensure the full annual funding of £97,500 across all wards is utilised, contributing to Stevenage's goal of becoming a greener place to live. The fund operates on a rolling basis with no application deadline.
