NHS Essex is investing an additional £850,000 into orthodontic services across the county, a move expected to help treat up to 500 extra patients by the end of March 2027 and significantly reduce waiting times.

The funding will support NHS orthodontic practices in Essex, addressing the rising demand for treatments that correct improperly aligned teeth or jaws, which may include braces or retainers. A dental assessment is required to determine suitability for NHS orthodontic treatment.
This investment aims to support Essex residents currently waiting for orthodontic treatment and shorten existing waiting lists. It is also intended to strengthen the capacity of orthodontic practices providing these essential services.
Beverley Flowers, Executive Director of Neighbourhood Health at NHS Essex, stated, "This is the next step we are taking to meet the needs of local residents and help reduce the length of time people spend waiting for services. We know more needs to be done, and we will continue working with our providers and partners as we start to set out plans for future orthodontic care."
Plans for the future of orthodontic services across Essex are anticipated to be announced in 2027. This initiative is part of broader efforts by NHS Essex to improve access to local NHS dental services.
In addition to orthodontic care, some dental practices in Essex are offering appointments outside of core hours for urgent and routine dental needs, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. These can be booked by calling NHS 111, with priority given to those most in need. Plans are also in place to expand the Care Homes Dental Scheme county-wide, bringing dental professionals directly to care homes to provide check-ups and treatments for residents who may struggle to attend external appointments.
