As Stoptober concludes, Thurrock Council is reminding residents that free, personalised support to quit smoking is available all year round, encouraging them to take the first step towards a healthier future.

The annual national Stoptober campaign encourages smokers to make a quit attempt during October, with research indicating that successfully abstaining from smoking for 28 days significantly increases the likelihood of quitting permanently. With only a few days left in the campaign, those considering quitting are urged to start, and those already on their journey are encouraged to persevere.
Thurrock Council reported a 21% increase in referrals to its Healthy Lifestyle Stop Smoking Service earlier this year compared to the previous year. Despite this positive trend, smoking remains a significant public health challenge in Thurrock, with 14.3% of adults smoking, which is above the national average.
The Thurrock Council's Stop Smoking Service offers free, personalised support for 12 months of the year. Through the council’s Health Trainer Service, residents can receive up to 12 weeks of one-to-one support, tailored quit plans, and practical advice on managing cravings and changing habits. Nicotine replacement therapy, vape starter kits, and prescribed stop smoking medication may also be available based on individual needs and suitability.
An incentive is available for those who successfully quit smoking for 12 weeks with the council’s Health Trainers: a free two-month Impulse Leisure membership, worth £150, subject to availability. Support is accessible for individuals ready to make a change, whether now, next month, or in the New Year.
Quitting smoking offers numerous health benefits, including improved circulation, breathing, and energy levels soon after the last cigarette, as well as reducing the risk of serious illnesses like heart disease, stroke, and cancer. It also helps residents save money. The campaign reminds individuals that every quit attempt counts, and professional support can make a significant difference, especially for those who have tried to quit before.
Residents who have participated in this year's Stoptober are encouraged to continue their progress beyond October by utilising the council’s free services. Thurrock Council urges residents not to delay making positive changes, emphasising that free, friendly, and professional support is available throughout the year to help individuals start and maintain their smoke-free journey.
