The initiative, which has previously helped over 21,200 children receive more than 44,702 donations, seeks to expand its reach this year. The council is appealing for community generosity to ensure that children who might otherwise not receive a Christmas gift do so.
The scheme runs until Tuesday 15 December. Donations of new, unwrapped gifts are requested, which will be sorted and wrapped by volunteers. The council is particularly keen to receive gifts for older children and teenagers, as these age groups often receive fewer donations.
“"Every year, I'm inspired by the incredible generosity of our community and the kindness shown to those who need it most. Supporting local toy shops while helping to make Christmas magical for others is a wonderful way to give back."
Donations can include new toys suitable for ages up to 18, toy or day out vouchers, selection packs, pens, pencils, colouring books, and toiletry sets. If toys require batteries, these should be included.
Gifts can be purchased from Argosy Toys or Toys 'N' Tuck, with council elves collecting them. Alternatively, donations can be delivered to the Civic Centre, the Forum, or Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre by the deadline.
Online donations can be made via Argosy Toys by selecting "Toy Drive", or from Toys 'N' Tuck by searching "Southend Toy Drive Donation". For bulk donation arrangements or any queries, contact 01702 215841 or email ToyDrive@southend.gov.uk.
