Southend-on-Sea City Council has been formally instructed by Central Government to publish its current draft Local Plan for public consultation, which must begin in early November.

The instruction from Central Government requires the council to release the existing draft Local Development Plan and commence a public consultation process by early November, continuing for the remainder of the year. Cllr Kevin Robinson, Cabinet Member for Planning, Property and Governance, stated that the council must now proceed with this directive. He emphasised that this publication does not signify the formal adoption of the plan or its finalisation, encouraging residents, businesses, and community groups to review the document and provide their input.
The Local Development Plan serves as the city's primary planning document, outlining proposed policies for future development, housing, infrastructure, and land use across Southend. The draft plan, also referred to as 'Regulation 19', is a crucial step in the statutory planning process. It allows for public review and feedback from residents, businesses, and stakeholders.
The Government's communication directing the publication is available on the council website. Once the consultation is live, responses can be submitted via a dedicated Local Plan website, which will be updated prior to the consultation period.
