Stevenage Borough Council has launched the '80 Trees for Stevenage at 80' project, planting 80 trees along a four-mile heritage trail to commemorate the town's 80th anniversary.

The initiative aims to create a lasting green legacy, improve the local environment, support wildlife, and make Stevenage greener and healthier for future generations. The trail will pass through five neighbourhoods: Bedwell, Broadwater, Shephall, Chells, and Pin Green, starting in Bedwell and concluding at Hampson Park, tracing the growth of the UK's first New Town.
The council collaborated with tree expert Keith Sacre of Barcham Trees to develop the planting scheme. The project features a wide variety of trees, including native species and those from around the world, such as the English Oak, Silver Lime, and the signature Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), chosen for its distinctive flowers and autumn colours, symbolising growth and the future.
The new trees are expected to enhance air quality, absorb carbon, provide shade, support wildlife and pollinators, improve streetscapes, and contribute to residents' health and wellbeing. The project officially launched on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, with the first tree planted at Walden End and the final commemorative tree at Hampson Park Pitch and Putt.
The remaining 78 trees will be planted in the coming weeks, with the trail anticipated to be completed by early December. Once finished, the Stevenage 80 Tree Trail will offer residents and visitors a new way to explore the town's green spaces and neighbourhoods, with trees providing seasonal interest throughout the year.
