The Ministry has withdrawn its original application for 1,250 individuals and submitted a new proposal for 931 asylum seekers. The government considers the development to be nationally significant and urgent, though the basis for this decision has not been detailed.
Cllr Cliff Waterman, Leader of West Suffolk Council, stated that environmental and legislative constraints, including the site's proximity to the Breckland Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC), prevent its development. He noted that these issues have halted development previously and expressed a lack of evidence to suggest the current proposal differs.
The council awaits the new planning application, which it will formally respond to. Councillor Waterman reiterated the council's strong opposition to the plans, deeming them unsuitable for both local communities and the asylum seekers themselves.
He added: “We will continue to work with partners and the local community to use the best evidence and arguments so that ministers are clear the site should not be used in this way.” The council continues to call on ministers to meet with them.
