As the festive season draws near, Bedford Borough Council has announced a spectacular line-up of Christmas events across Bedford and Kempston. Residents are invited to save the dates for Christmas light displays, live music, carols, food, arts, crafts, and free family activities.
The Bedford Lights Switch-On will take place on Saturday, 21 November, in Harpur Square, starting at midday. The Christmas lights will be officially switched on at 5pm by the Mayor of Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton. The event will feature live entertainment throughout the day, including performances by the Bedford Youth Community Gospel Choir, Bedford Rock Choir, Junior Spotlight Singers from Castle Newnham School, Song Squad performing arts, Stagecoach Bedford Borough, Donna Samuel, Funk Odyssey, and Laura Menozzi and friends. A sing-along with Laura Menozzi and friends will accompany the lights switch-on, followed by a DJ set from Bedford Radio until 6pm. Visitors can also enjoy free Christmas films at the Harpur Suite from 11am to 4:45pm, along with craft and gift stalls, food offerings, and a free face painter. Colouring-in activities will be available at the What's On Bedford Borough Visitor Information Centre on Silver Street.
The Kempston Lights Switch-On is scheduled for Sunday, 29 November, at the Saxon Centre in Kempston town centre, running from midday to 6pm. The event, supported by the Council's Markets team and Kempston Town Council, will include craft and gift stalls, food, live entertainment, and children's rides. The lights will be switched on at 5pm by a special guest from the North Pole.
Further festive attractions include the Bedford Christmas Market, held at Harpur Square and the Harpur Suite on Saturday, 5 December (10am-5pm) and Sunday, 6 December (10am-4pm). Local crafters, makers, and producers will offer unique gifts, decorations, and festive treats. Additionally, the first Bedford Christmas Art Fair, organised by Perch Presents, will take place at St. Paul's Square on Sunday, 6 December (10am-4pm), showcasing works by local painters, illustrators, and printmakers. Festive music will be played throughout the town centre during the weekend.
“"We are delighted to welcome everyone to the Christmas events this year. This is a wonderful way to bring our communities together, support local businesses in the town centres and spotlight local talent at the first Christmas Art Fair. Save the dates in your diaries to make more memories and be part of the festivities."
