Central Bedfordshire has been identified as one of the top areas in England where children experience the least challenging childhoods, according to a significant new report.

The report, titled The Childhood Lottery, analysed 162 measures of children's lives, including education, health, family life, and community safety. Central Bedfordshire scored 677 out of a possible 960, ranking ninth nationally.
The findings reflect a broad spectrum of factors, such as child poverty, policing, and health services, and are not intended as a measure of council performance.

"It’s good to see Central Bedfordshire recognised as a place where children tend to have a positive start in life. This result is down to far more than the council. I’m grateful to everyone who helps make that possible. Schools, health services, the police, the voluntary and community sector, and above all families and young people themselves all play a part, and we’re fortunate to have strong partnerships across Central Bedfordshire."

Cllr Mackey · Executive Member for Children and Families
Cllr Mackey added that the council's role is to collaborate with partners to foster an environment where children can thrive. He acknowledged that averages can mask internal differences and that not all children and families have the same experience, emphasising a commitment to continued listening and partnership working.
