Work has begun on a significant refurbishment of Clacton seafront, aiming to revitalise three underused buildings and establish a new centre for creativity and culture on the Essex Sunshine Coast.

Tendring District Council (TDC) is undertaking the project, which involves transforming an iconic curved shelter, former public toilets, and a storage hut overlooking Kings Promenade. This initiative is part of a broader £20 million regeneration scheme designed to enhance the prominent location above one of Clacton’s most popular beaches.
The overhaul aims to create new opportunities for businesses and creative organisations, building on existing private investment around Clacton Pier and the Martello Lounge. The Beach Patrol base beneath the buildings is also being refurbished to support the team for the upcoming 2027 season.
“

"Clacton is a vibrant, family-friendly destination and this project will help to bring even more culture and creativity to our seafront. We are taking buildings which have been underused for years and giving them a new purpose in one of the most prominent locations on the Essex Sunshine Coast. Together with the investment taking place nearby, this project will help create an even more vibrant and attractive destination for residents, visitors and businesses alike. It is one of a number of projects showing the real progress being made through our £20 million regeneration programme."

A public art commission and hoarding designs inspired by Clacton’s heritage and future will decorate the site perimeter before the end of the year. During construction, a small section of pathway near the buildings is closed, but step-free access remains available from the Memorial Gardens to the promenade.
Re-Gen UK Construction Ltd is carrying out the refurbishment for TDC. The plans were approved by TDC’s planning committee in April and are funded by TDC’s Community Regeneration Partnership with the Government. The wider £20 million programme includes shopfront improvements, community transport enhancements, and new facilities at Clacton Leisure Centre.
