Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (EPUT) has proudly achieved re-accreditation as a Veteran Aware Trust. This recognition from the Veterans Covenant Hospital Healthcare Alliance (VCHA) underscores EPUT’s significant contributions through Op COURAGE, a vital service operating across the East of England dedicated to aiding armed forces veterans in their reintegration into civilian life and providing access to essential mental health and wellbeing support.
Initially recognised in 2021, EPUT has now secured re-accreditation for an additional three years following a thorough review. The VCHA, an alliance funded by NHS England, focuses on equipping healthcare providers with the understanding and tools necessary to meet the specific needs of the armed forces community.
Andrew Mcmenemy, Chief People Officer at EPUT, expressed his delight: “I am delighted that EPUT has been re-accredited as a Veteran Aware Trust. A lot of progress has been made since we first became a Veteran Aware Trust, in particular the work that has been done to make the Trust a better place to work and receive healthcare, as a member of the armed forces community. The accreditation also recognises our work around identifying and sharing best practice for veterans across the NHS.”
This re-accreditation affirms EPUT’s provision of high-quality care for veterans and its commitment to training staff to effectively understand and address veterans’ needs, thereby preventing disadvantage when seeking healthcare services. It reflects the Trust’s dedication to fostering a veteran-friendly environment and enhancing staff comprehension of military experiences and their potential impact on physical and mental health.
EPUT also holds signatory status for the Armed Forces Covenant and has been awarded a gold award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme by the Ministry of Defence. These accolades acknowledge the Trust as a Forces Friendly employer, actively supporting the recruitment of current and former armed forces personnel and their partners.
EPUT aims to be a leading health and wellbeing service provider in mental health and community care, serving over 100,000 patients concurrently. The organisation has invested in safer and more therapeutic inpatient facilities and community services, alongside technological enhancements and continuous staff training, to improve care quality. Initiatives like the 111 mental health crisis phone line, employment of individuals with lived experience, a mental health urgent care department, and specialised teams like the Rough Sleeper team, demonstrate EPUT’s commitment to accessible and innovative support.
