Cancer patients in Essex can now access faster diagnostic imaging following the opening of a new PET-CT centre at Southend Hospital, featuring advanced technology and enhanced patient facilities.

A new, purpose-built PET-CT facility has opened at Southend Hospital, significantly upgrading the existing service for cancer patients in Essex. The centre aims to provide faster scans, reduce waiting times, and offer a more comfortable environment.
Equipped with the latest imaging technology, including a state-of-the-art scanner, the new centre is designed to meet growing demand for specialist diagnostic imaging. It features expanded areas for patients before and after their scans, increasing capacity by over 20 per cent, which is expected to allow for approximately five extra patients to be scanned each day.
“

"This new facility is a significant enhancement to our existing PET-CT service, helping us deliver the high standard of care our patients deserve. The combination of modern scanner technology, increased capacity and improved patient facilities means we can provide a better experience for patients while supporting faster access to high-quality diagnostic imaging."

The patient journey has been improved with six dedicated rooms offering comfortable waiting spaces. Enhanced patient flow and larger waiting areas are intended to reduce congestion and create a calmer atmosphere. The facility also includes a laboratory, booking office, and improved support services for both patients and staff.
The new centre, owned and operated by Alliance Medical, represents a significant investment in diagnostic services at Southend Hospital. It replaces a temporary mobile scanning unit and is now fully operational, located next to the Outpatients Department.
