Cancer patients in Essex can now benefit from faster scans and improved care following the opening of a new PET-CT facility at Southend Hospital.

A new, purpose-built PET-CT centre has opened its doors at Southend Hospital, marking a significant upgrade to the existing service. The facility features the latest imaging technology, aiming to provide faster scans, shorter waiting times, and a more comfortable environment for patients undergoing cancer and other specialist diagnostic imaging.
The centre boasts a state-of-the-art scanner and significantly expanded pre- and post-scan areas. This increased capacity is designed to meet the growing demand for diagnostic imaging. Dr Shaifali Jain, Consultant Radiologist for Cancer Services at MSEFT, stated that the new facility is a "significant enhancement" helping to deliver a high standard of care.
The combination of modern scanner technology, increased capacity, and improved patient facilities is expected to allow for approximately five extra patients to be scanned each day, representing an increase of over 20 per cent. Dr Jonathan Mo, Consultant Radiologist at MSEFT, highlighted that this will provide a better experience and faster access to high-quality diagnostic imaging.
Designed to improve the entire patient journey, the centre includes six dedicated rooms for patients to wait comfortably after tracer injections and before their scans. Larger waiting areas and improved patient flow aim to reduce congestion and create a calmer atmosphere during what can be an anxious time.
The facility also incorporates a laboratory, booking office, and enhanced support facilities for both patients and staff. The project is the result of several years of planning and collaboration between clinical, operational, and estates teams. Owned and operated by Alliance Medical, it represents a substantial investment in diagnostic services at Southend Hospital.
The new unit, located next to the Outpatients Department, replaces a previous scanner and reception areas that were housed in a temporary mobile unit, promising a much-improved patient experience.
