The initiative, which encouraged children to continue reading throughout the school holidays, has been hailed a success, fostering confidence, imagination, and a love for reading across various formats including books, comics, poetry, graphic novels, and audiobooks.
The challenge saw remarkable engagement from young readers, families, volunteers, and library staff. Key statistics from the summer include 487 new child members joining Southend Libraries, 929 children completing the challenge, and a total of 1,847 children taking part overall. Furthermore, over 28,000 books, e-books, and audiobooks were borrowed.
The success was also bolstered by the dedication of 57 volunteers who contributed over 1,500 hours to support young readers. Through library visits, activities, community outreach, and book discussions, the 'Read to the Beat' programme successfully integrated reading into the summer for thousands of children.
The most popular titles issued during the challenge were There's A Dinosaur In Your Book by Tom Fletcher, Despicable Bean! by Sue Hendra, and For Whom The Ball Rolls by Dav Piley.
Southend Libraries expressed gratitude to all participants, highlighting that while the official challenge has concluded, the opportunity to engage with reading continues. The library service offers a wide range of resources for children, catering to interests in adventure, comics, non-fiction, and audiobooks.
