Braintree District Council's Planning Committee has approved plans to install 123 solar panels on the flat roof of Silver End Village Hall. The new panels will generate renewable energy, helping to power the community building and reduce its environmental impact.
This initiative is part of the council's broader £1.5 million investment programme aimed at modernising community assets across the district. The improvements are expected to lower running costs and carbon emissions, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the facility. The solar panels will not be visible from ground level, preserving the character of the village hall and the surrounding Silver End Conservation Area.
Councillor Kevin Bowers, Cabinet Member for Finance, Assets and Performance at Braintree District Council, expressed his delight at the decision. He stated, "Silver End Village Hall plays an important role for local residents, providing a space for people to come together for community activities, events and support services, so I’m delighted that planning permission has been granted for these improvements."
He added, "Installing solar panels will help reduce the building's carbon footprint and energy costs, making it more sustainable and helping to safeguard this valued facility for the future. By investing more into community facilities like this, we’re making sure they’re fit for the future, more energy efficient and remain welcoming spaces for everyone.”
The installation is scheduled to be carried out by contractors already on site as part of the council's ongoing programme of improvements. Work is expected to commence in November 2026, with batteries and connection works to follow shortly after to enable immediate efficiency gains.
