Southend's iconic Kursaal has received a £540,000 funding boost from Historic England to support essential restoration works and its return to public use.

The Grade II listed building will undergo vital conservation and repair works, addressing structural issues, water damage, and deterioration to protect its historic features. This investment follows the recent lease takeover by Remblance Leisure Ltd, led by Star Amusements, who are progressing plans to revive the Kursaal as a family-focused leisure and entertainment destination.
Cllr Daniel Cowan, Leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, expressed determination to secure the building's future. "The Kursaal is one of Southend's most iconic landmarks," he stated. "We've secured a new leaseholder who has already got restoration work underway. Now, together, we've secured another £540,000 to help bring this incredible building back to life and I'm excited to see what comes next."
The planned works will ensure the building is weather-tight and structurally secure, facilitating increased public access. Funding will also contribute to the restoration of key historic areas, including the dome entrance and ticket hall.
Nick Singer, Operations Director at Star Amusements, who submitted the funding application, commented: "This funding is a significant boost for the project and will help us continue essential restoration work while respecting the Kursaal's heritage. We're excited about its future and the role it can once again play in Southend's leisure and entertainment offer."
This funding represents a key milestone in the Kursaal's phased restoration, with further developments anticipated before the building fully reopens to the public.
