Southend-on-Sea City Council is preparing to approve its 'Food & Feed' Safety Plan for the 2026-27 period, detailing how it will ensure the safety of food and animal feed.

The plan, developed in line with Food Standards Agency requirements, outlines the Food Team's priorities for the upcoming year and reviews work completed in 2025-26. A significant aspect of this involves conducting routine inspections of over 1,500 food businesses within the city, assessed by their risk level.
Councillor Irene Ferguson, Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, highlighted the importance of the Environmental Health team's work. "Southend has more than 1,500 food businesses, and much of the Environmental Health team's work happens behind the scenes," she stated. "Their efforts help ensure that residents and visitors can have confidence that food sold across our seaside city is safe. Whether that is enjoying a fish and chips across the seafront, or many other restaurants and cafes."
Councillor Ferguson added, "This annual plan sets out how the team will continue to meet its legal responsibilities while supporting businesses and protecting public health."

The food hygiene rating scheme provides residents with confidence in the food premises they use. The impact of the work extends beyond Southend, as many food manufacturers' products are sold elsewhere. Currently, 94% of premises included in the scheme have achieved a 5/5 rating.
