Arts Council England representatives visited Tendring to witness the district's thriving arts and heritage scene, meeting local creatives and partners.

Tendring's creative sector was highlighted during a recent visit by Arts Council England (ACE), who came to experience the district's artists, festivals, and heritage projects firsthand. The visit provided an opportunity for Tendring District Council (TDC) to convene local artists, organisations, and community partners, demonstrating how national investment fosters confidence, creates opportunities, and increases engagement in arts and culture across the area.
Darren Henley, Chief Executive of ACE, along with colleagues, visited several key locations including the redeveloped Harwich Library, the Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre, and the Harwich Town Council’s Guildhall. During these stops, they engaged with cultural organisations and festival producers to learn about ongoing work, explore future possibilities, and discuss continued support for creativity and participation within Tendring's towns and communities.
Councillor Gary Scott, TDC's Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture and Heritage, expressed his pleasure at welcoming ACE back to Tendring. He stated, "Their return visit demonstrates the confidence they have in our creative and cultural ambitions and recognises the progress that has been made across the district in recent years. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the fantastic work being delivered by our artists, cultural organisations, volunteers and community partners. From theatre and heritage projects to festivals and community programmes, creativity is playing an increasingly important role in helping our communities thrive. As an Arts Council England Priority Place, we have benefited from strong support and partnership working which has helped us attract investment, build capacity and create new opportunities for local people. We are ambitious about the future and look forward to continuing that journey together."
A notable part of the visit included a performance by local theatre company Slaget Theatre and Funnelwick Limb, showcasing their production of 'Katherine'. This performance highlighted the local creative talent and the role culture plays in revitalising historic locations.
Hazel Edwards, ACE’S South East Area Director, commented, “It was wonderful to visit Harwich and see first-hand the passion and ambition that is helping to develop the arts and culture scene across Tendring. Meeting local artists, organisations and community partners highlighted the positive impact that investment in arts and culture can have in bringing local communities together. Arts Council England is pleased to continue working with Tendring District Council and local partners to help ensure that more people can access high-quality creative opportunities.”
The discussions also emphasised how culture contributes beyond the arts, supporting health and wellbeing, encouraging activity, and revitalising town centres and high streets.
