A routine litter clearance operation by Epping Forest District Council's street cleansing crew on Banks Lane in Theydon Mount took a critical turn when two workers, Mark and Charlie, noticed a downed power cable in a nearby field. The area around the cable was smouldering, posing an immediate fire risk.
The pair immediately contacted the emergency services and remained at the scene for over an hour, ensuring the area was safe until the power company arrived to make the cable secure. Councillor Ray Balcombe, Portfolio holder for contracts delivery and deputy leader, praised their professionalism.
“"I dread to think what could have happened. We’ve seen the devastation wildfires cause but this could have been life threatening if a person, or an animal, had accidently stepped on the live cable."
Councillor Balcombe highlighted the danger posed by fallen power lines, which can remain live and carry lethal voltage, capable of electrifying the surrounding ground. He commended Mark and Charlie for their quick thinking and responsible actions.
UK Power Networks advises the public to always treat power lines as live. If any lines are seen hanging low, damaged, or grounded, individuals should stay at least 10 metres away and call 0800 31 63 105 or 105. In cases of significant public risk, 999 should be called.
