Over the past four years, the Beryl bikes scheme in Hertsmere has provided significant advantages to residents and the environment. The cycle hire scheme facilitated nearly 60,000 journeys, covering a total distance of 115,000 km. Its 5,700 users have experienced increased physical activity, contributing to a healthier lifestyle. Concurrently, the wider community has benefited from improved air quality, a reduction in traffic congestion, and a decrease of over 4.6 tonnes in emissions.
In Bushey, where the scheme has proven popular and enhanced connectivity to Watford, the service will remain operational until 2028. However, a decision has been made to discontinue the Borehamwood service, which will cease on Thursday, October 22.
Hertsmere Borough Council acknowledges that this news may be disappointing for residents in Borehamwood who have valued the Beryl bikes. The council remains committed to providing a public cycle hire scheme within the borough and is actively negotiating with alternative suppliers. The aim is to introduce a more comprehensive and improved provision in Borehamwood, with plans to extend the service into other areas as well.
