The University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood have been designated as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence for adults with brain tumours.
The neuro-oncology network, managed by East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust, has received this prestigious designation from the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission (TJBCM). This recognition highlights the strength and quality of services provided to patients with brain tumours across the UK.
This designation means that two-thirds of the UK population now have access to a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence, a significant step towards ensuring equitable, excellent care for all adults diagnosed with a brain tumour, regardless of their location. The announcement was confirmed by Yvette Cooper MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, and Professor Peter Johnson, NHS England Clinical Director for Cancer, at an event in London.
The designation follows a rigorous two-year period of implementing innovative developments and service improvements. The neuro-oncology team demonstrated exceptional commitment, integrating various specialties to enhance patient care, from nursing and rehabilitation to clinical trial delivery. The service now meets all Tessa Jowell Standards of Excellence.
A panel of neuro-oncology experts particularly commended the centre for its well-resourced neuroradiology team, leading chemo- and radiotherapy services, exemplary neurology service, outstanding psychological and neuropsychological support, and extensive brain tumour research activity.
“
"This award is a testament to the hard work of an incredible team working above and beyond to deliver a world-class brain tumour service. Designation as a Centre of Excellence means more than just excellent care – it is a commitment to constantly improving, going further and faster for this patient group."
“
"We are delighted to be designated a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence for a second time. This award will reassure our patients, their families and carers, giving them confidence in the excellent care delivered by our teams. Tessa Jowell Centres of Excellence are synonymous with the highest quality, and designation measures all aspects of care including, importantly, patient’s experience."
The neuro-oncology team at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, including Dr Thomas Carter, Dr Anup Vinayan, and Dr James Wang, expressed pride in the collaborative work with colleagues at UCLH and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN).
The designation, which joins 14 centres previously recognised in 2024, confirms the commitment to high-quality care and continuous improvement for adults with brain tumours.
