Hertsmere Borough Council, in collaboration with Hertfordshire County Council’s Countryside Management Service (CMS), is set to begin significant improvements to the wetland area at Aberford Park, near the footpath to Croxdale Road.

The project will focus on restoring the original pond, clearing approximately 800 square metres of scrub while preserving selected trees and established habitats. The pond, covering around 300 square metres, will be restored to a depth of approximately one metre at its centre, featuring gently sloping margins and an irregular edge to create a more natural habitat for wildlife.
Following the main restoration, CMS volunteers will sow a native seed mix around the pond margins in spring to encourage diverse wildflowers and grasses. The work is intended to provide better conditions for wildlife and enhance the experience for park visitors, improving sight lines from Croxdale Road.

"I’m delighted to continue the upgrades to Aberford Park. In the spring and summer, we restored the footbridges across the Brook. This latest phase will restore the pond and wetland area and further encourage the wildlife that we know our residents value. It will also improve sight lines and make the path more welcoming as you enter from Croxdale Road. Following this, we will continue with improvements to the brook, play equipment and skate park."

Aberford Park will remain publicly accessible, though paths near the pond may be temporarily closed during works. Warning signs and barriers will be used where necessary, and work areas will be secured daily. Site access for vehicles will be via Croxdale Road and a nearby service road.
The improvement works are scheduled to commence on Tuesday 10 November and are expected to take two weeks. For further information, residents can contact parks@hertsmere.gov.uk or call 020 8207 2277.
