Three Rivers District Council has taken the decision to remove several pieces of play equipment from two popular play areas in Mill End and South Oxhey with immediate effect, following an annual safety inspection.
An inspection by an external company highlighted that certain play equipment at the King George V play area in Mill End and the Ashburnham Drive play area in South Oxhey needed to be decommissioned. The council is exploring options to change, refresh, or replace the affected equipment and is currently obtaining quotes and timescales.
The equipment affected includes zip wires, trampolines, and cantilever swings at the King George V play area, and cradle swings, cantilever swings, log climbers, and zip wires at the Ashburnham Drive play area. The remaining equipment in both locations is deemed safe for use.
Cllr Chris Lloyd, Lead Member for Leisure, stated that while the popularity of the equipment is pleasing, health and safety must be the top priority. He acknowledged the potential frustration for parents and children. Some equipment will be removed by the council's Grounds Maintenance Team, with larger items handled by an external company. Temporary fencing may be in place, and visitors are asked to respect signage.
The council apologises for any inconvenience caused and asks for patience and understanding. Families can find their nearest alternative play area via the council's website. The council is committed to ensuring the play areas are safe and operational for families.
