Safer Watford, the town's Community Safety Partnership, is seeking public input on the continuation of the order that prevents the consumption of alcohol in public spaces. The consultation aims to ensure the measures remain effective in maintaining the safety and family-friendly atmosphere of Watford.
The existing Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) is in effect 24 hours a day and covers areas such as parks, play areas, cemeteries, and footpaths. It grants Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), and authorised officers the power to ask individuals to stop drinking and surrender open alcohol containers. Non-compliance can lead to a fixed penalty notice, court summons, or a fine of up to £500.
The PSPO is targeted at anti-social behaviour and does not prevent responsible drinking. Individuals will only be asked to stop drinking if approached by an authorised officer. Street parties and other community events where alcohol is consumed can proceed as normal.
The public consultation begins on 14 October 2026 and will run for three weeks, offering residents an opportunity to voice their opinions and suggestions regarding the PSPO.
“"We must make sure that Watford continues to be a safe and welcoming with lots of opportunities for residents and visitors alike to have fun. The PSPO will help to make sure that everyone can continue to feel safe and provide reassurance that we will take action against antisocial behaviour."
