As Bonfire Night approaches on 5 November, Trading Standards officers are conducting annual inspections of fireworks retailers across Central Bedfordshire to ensure safety and legal compliance.

From late October through November, officers will visit local retailers to verify that fireworks are being sold, stored, and handled safely and legally. Checks will include ensuring appropriate licences are in place, storage conditions meet legal requirements, and products comply with UK safety standards.
These inspections are part of the council's ongoing efforts to protect consumers and minimise the risks associated with fireworks, especially with increased sales leading up to Bonfire Night celebrations. Retailers will also be reminded of the illegality of selling fireworks to individuals under the age of 18, with potential enforcement action for breaches.

"Fireworks can be enjoyed safely by families and communities when they are purchased from reputable retailers and used responsibly. Our Trading Standards team carries out inspections every year to help ensure fireworks sold in Central Bedfordshire meet legal safety standards and are stored correctly."

Councillor Liz Childs · Executive Member for Public Protection
Councillor Liz Childs, Executive Member for Public Protection, also urged residents to be considerate of others when using fireworks, particularly those with young children, older residents, and animals. She advised following the rules and planning ahead for safe celebrations.
Residents are encouraged to purchase fireworks only from reputable retailers and to look for the UKCA or CE marking, indicating compliance with safety standards. For those concerned about handling fireworks, attending a professionally organised community display is recommended.
It is illegal to set off fireworks in a public place, with specific time restrictions applying. Fireworks must not be used between 11pm and 7am, except on Bonfire Night itself when the cut-off is midnight, and on certain other recognised celebrations with extended hours.
Concerns regarding the illegal sale or unsafe storage of fireworks can be reported to the Trading Standards team via email at trading.standards@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.
