Cambridgeshire County Council has relaunched its annual 'Be Winter Wise' campaign, featuring mascot Olly the Owl, to provide residents with essential advice and support for the colder months.
The campaign aims to support the council’s vision for a healthy, fair, and sustainable Cambridgeshire by offering practical guidance on a range of winter-related issues. This includes advice on managing the cost of living, with money-saving tips, grants, and free supermarket vouchers for eligible children. Residents are also encouraged to look after their health and wellbeing, including getting eligible vaccinations.
Practical information on winter gritting schedules and road safety, especially during dark evenings, will be shared. The campaign also provides simple steps to make homes warmer, healthier, and more energy-efficient, alongside details of free and low-cost family activities available across Cambridgeshire, including library services.
Guidance on preparing for adverse weather conditions such as freezing temperatures and flooding is also a key component. The 'Be Winter Wise' initiative will signpost residents to essential services offered by local partner organisations, covering heating, energy advice, and community wellbeing support.
Emphasising community resilience, the campaign encourages residents to support one another through simple actions like checking on older family and friends. It also promotes small, sustainable actions, such as reducing waste and supporting local initiatives, to lower household costs and environmental impact.
Households will be encouraged to prepare for potential disruptions to essential services like power, water, and the internet. This advice aligns with the Government's 'Be Ready' resilience campaign, aimed at helping residents prepare for severe weather and cyber attacks.
