Essex has successfully secured national funding through the 'Steps to Safety' programme to enhance support for individuals affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence across Southend, Essex, and Thurrock.

Natalie Hammond, Interim Chief Nursing Officer for NHS Essex, announced the positive news, highlighting the importance of providing accessible help for those experiencing abuse. The funding aims to strengthen existing services and create clearer pathways to specialist support.
The 'Steps to Safety' initiative will provide additional training for GPs and their teams, equipping them to recognise the signs of abuse, respond sensitively, and connect patients with the right services. Specialist practitioners will also offer advice and support.
Hammond emphasised that the programme is not intended to overburden busy GP teams but rather to empower them with the knowledge and specialist support needed to assist patients effectively. The goal is to ensure that personal circumstances do not dictate the quality of support received.
Working in collaboration with specialist domestic abuse and sexual violence services and local partners, the ambition is to create a more consistent approach across Southend, Essex, and Thurrock. This investment in the workforce and partnerships is seen as a crucial step towards helping more people feel safe and supported.
