Following a statement in the House of Commons by Housing, Communities and Local Government Minister Jim McMahon, the councils noted that for Greater Essex, the decision previously withdrawn in September remains withdrawn. The region will now form part of a wider review, though the government has reiterated its commitment to LGR and all submitted proposals are still under consideration.
An update on the outcome of this review is expected by early 2027. In the interim, the councils stated they will continue to work constructively with the government and partners across Essex to secure the best possible outcome for residents, businesses, communities, and staff. No immediate changes to the councils or their services are anticipated.
The government has confirmed that local elections scheduled for May 2027 will proceed for existing councils, with elections for any new councils planned for May 2028, ahead of a planned vesting day in 2029. The councils expressed pleasure that the government recognised the costs already incurred in preparing for LGR and confirmed that Greater Essex will receive £450,000 of the previously announced £900,000 transition funding, based on the number of new unitary authorities initially proposed. They will continue to advocate for reimbursement of all incurred costs.
The statement concluded by highlighting that work through the North East Essex Partnership has strengthened collaboration between the councils and their understanding of local challenges and opportunities. They remain committed to working together to deliver the best outcomes as the review progresses.
