The final stage of decarbonisation works at The Apex venue has been completed, marking a significant reduction in carbon emissions and operational costs.

The decarbonisation project at The Apex has concluded, featuring a series of building improvements aimed at reducing carbon emissions and running expenses. Key upgrades include the installation of air source heat pumps to replace gas boilers, the implementation of energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and the conversion of gas systems to more efficient electrical equipment.
These enhancements are expected to lower the venue's energy consumption and associated heating and operational costs. This initiative aligns with West Suffolk Council's objective to achieve net zero emissions by 2039. The project is projected to decrease the venue's annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from 127.62 tonnes to 71.23 tonnes, equivalent to removing approximately 12 to 13 petrol cars from the road annually.
Commencing in the summer of 2025, the project received £1.1 million from the council's decarbonisation fund, supplemented by an additional £1.01 million from West Suffolk Council's Asset Management Plan reserve. Cllr Gerald Kelly, Cabinet Member for Governance, Regulatory and Environment at West Suffolk Council, highlighted the benefits, stating, “The completion of the decarbonisation works at one of the busiest and energy-intensive venues in West Suffolk will deliver meaningful benefits to the local community. By replacing older heating systems and introducing more efficient technologies, we have enabled The Apex to use cleaner energy and consume less of it. While these energy-saving measures will help reduce energy costs and consumption, they are also a vital step in future-proofing our public buildings and strengthening environmental resilience across the district.”
Cllr Ian Shipp, Cabinet Member for Leisure at West Suffolk Council, added, “The Apex plays an important role in the cultural life of the town, welcoming audiences, community groups and visitors throughout the year. The decarbonisation works will create a more comfortable internal environment, provide improved heating and environmental controls, enhance conditions for performers and audiences, and deliver better indoor air quality. The completion of these works represents a major upgrade to the venue, with an investment that will help The Apex continue to be a vibrant and valued part of the town centre for many years to come. We sincerely thank residents for their continued patience throughout any temporary disruption.”
West Suffolk Council's ongoing commitment to decarbonising its buildings has been recognised, with the council being named the top-performing district council in the buildings and heating category of the environmental scorecard issued by Climate Emergency UK. Further details on the net zero roadmap are available on the council's website.
